The Fourth International
Conference on Ultramafic (Serpentine) Ecology took place in April 2003 in Cuba.
The importance of the ultramafic areas of Cuba has gone unrecognized for many
years but this volume establishes Cuba as one of the leading areas in the world
for the study of ultramafic vegetation. It contains 51 papers from authors in 15
countries. Besides papers on Cuban ultramafics, there are contributions
regarding ultramafic areas in Canada, Europe, New Caledonia and the United
States.
The volume includes papers on the following topics:
• Geology and soils,
• Floristic, phytogeographic and vegetation studies from Cuba and elsewhere,
• The microbiology of ultramafic soils,
• The fauna of ultramafic areas,
• Hyperaccumulation and heavy metal accumulator species,
• Ecology, conservation and restoration of ultramafic sites.
Contributions are in English or Spanish and all papers have both English and
Spanish summaries.
La Cuarta Conferencia Internacional sobre Ecología de Ultramafitas (serpentina)
se celebró en abril del 2003 en Cuba. La importancia de las áreas ultramáficas
de Cuba no se ha reconocido durante muchos años pero este volumen establece a
Cuba como una de las áreas líderes en el mundo para el estudio de la vegetación
ultramáfica. En este volumen se incluyen 51 artículos de autores de 15 países.
Además de los artículos sobre las ultramafitas de Cuba contiene contribuciones
relacionadas con áreas ultramáficas en Canadá, Europa, Nueva Caledonia y los
Estados Unidos.
El volumen incluye artículos sobre los temas siguientes:
• Geología y suelos,
• Flora, fitogeografía y vegetación de Cuba y otras regiones,
• Microbiología de suelos ultramáficos
• Fauna de áreas ultramáficas,
• Hiperacumulación y especies acumuladoras de metales pesados,
• Ecología, conservación y restauración de áreas ultramáficas.
Las contribuciones son en inglés o en español y todas tienen resúmenes inglés
y español.
