Inflammation and Immunology in Chronic Inflammatory Periodontal Disease Proceedings of the 11th Meeting of the British Inflammation Research Association ISBN 0-905927-88-5 Hardback Editors Professor Hubert
N. Newman, BDent Sc, MA, PhD, ScD, MDS, This book reviews current status and recent exciting advances in our understanding of the pathology of this common human disease group. One of the most interesting consequences of this work is the realisation that periodontal inflammation can provide a useful research model for other inflammatory conditions, including arthritis, and mechanisms of soft connective tissue breakdown, particularly collagenolysis, and bone resorption. The inflammatory/immune response, often difficult to observe for reasons of access, is relatively easy to study in the periodontium. The great variety of microbial stimuli, because of the many different plaque species and strains, makes the host response very complex. Further studies concerned with chemical agents in the control of gingivitis and periodontitis may also have relevance to those concerned with the improved treatment of more severe inflammatory disorders.
